Importance of Sunglasses All Year Long

Why Proper Eye Care Means UV Protection All Year Long

You probably remember to grab a pair of sunglasses when you head out for fun at the pool or the beach. But many people don't realize that you don't only need sunglasses on bright, sunny days. Good eye care means slipping on some UV protection every day that you are outside. Our Northport NY optometrist can help you choose the right glasses to keep your eyes healthy all year long.

How UV Rays Affect Your Eyes

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean it cannot hurt you. UV rays are invisible to the sun but can cause serious damage when you do not wear UV protection. The sun's rays can cause damage to the skin of your eyelids as well to the eye itself.

Without UV protection, you are at higher risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on the eye. Damaging rays do not just occur when the weather is sunny and warm. UV rays are emitted by the sun every day of the year.

Choosing a Good Pair of Sunglasses

Sunglasses need to meet a few different criteria to offer good sun protection. It does not matter whether the lenses in your glasses are light or dark, or what color they are. What does matters is that they block out at least 99% of both UVA and UVB radiation? Additionally, they should block out between 75 and 90% of visible light. Many optometry experts suggest choosing wraparound sunglasses or ones that are closefitting on your head to block out rays from the side. Lenses on your glasses should be free of distortions and imperfections that can hamper clear vision.
